Rip currents and shore break: understanding them and staying safe

Rip currents and shore break: understanding them and staying safe

Published on : 04/02/2026 04 February Feb 02 2026

Rip currents form during the rising tide. They are caused by the interaction between waves and the current, which creates a depression of varying size and depth.

A shore break is a wave that breaks near or on the beach, i.e. close enough to the shore that the water is not deep.

These waves can be very powerful and dangerous as they can throw surfers and swimmers onto the sand.
